LoRaWAN at a Glance
LoRaWAN® (Long Range Wide-Area Network) is an open, low-power networking protocol that rides on top of Semtech’s LoRa® radio modulation. Perfect for battery-powered 센서 to send tiny packets over kilometers of unlicensed sub-GHz spectrum. With a simple gateway to collect and broadcast straight into the cloud.
What Problem does LoRaWAN solve?
Wi-Fi drains batteries, that’s a fact. Bluetooth runs out of range quite quickly. And cellular modules come with monthly fees that can break the bank. LoRaWAN slips neatly between those extremes: a city gateway on a rooftop will hear devices two–five kilometers away, while a rural antenna on a grain silo can reach fifteen kilometers or more.
LoRaWAN shines with:
- 10-15 km rural / 2-5 km urban range
- Years-long battery life (sleep-first Class A devices can last 5–10 years on an AA pack)
- Star-of-stars topology (gateways are just packet forwarders—no complex mesh hops)
- License-free spectrum (e.g., 868 MHz EU, 915 MHz US, 433 MHz CN)
- End-to-end AES-128 security (two-layer key scheme, OTAA join procedure)
- Global, open ecosystem driven by the LoRa Alliance™
How does LoRaWAN work?
- Wake & Chirp: Device transmits at one of six spreading factors (SF7–SF12).
- Any Gateway Wins: Whichever gateway hears the chirp forwards it—as-is—over IP backhaul.
- Network Server: De-duplicates packets, runs Adaptive Data Rate, checks frame counters, and drops clean JSON on your application.
- Downlink Slots: Downlinks (ACKs, control, FOTA) are scheduled according to the device class (A, B, C). Class A devices open two short receive windows, one and two seconds after each uplink.

Why is LoRaWAN different?
- Battery first. Devices transmit only when they have data; the radio sleeps >99 % of the time.
- Scale. A single gateway can service hundreds of devices; Lansitec’s Indoor and Outdoor LoRaWAN Gateways list “> 500 in one gateway” out of the box.
- Flexible classes.
- Class A – lowest power, two short downlink slots after each uplink (default).
- Class B – scheduled 비콘 give extra downlink windows.
- Class C – receiver always on; great for actuators when power is plentiful.
- Network ownership. Build a private network, or roam on public LoRaWAN carriers.
LoRa 대 LoRaWAN
Bare 로라 gives you the physical layer (raw chirps on the air) but no addressing, no retransmission, and no encryption beyond what you add yourself. 로라완 wraps that radio in a MAC and networking spec: device and application IDs, AES-128 security, adaptive data rate, roaming, even firmware updates.

The proximity sensor is equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 and LoRaWAN capabilities. When a Bluetooth beacon comes into close proximity, the sensor activates buzzing and flashing. It then transmits the beacon’s ID and received signal strength indicator (RSSI) to a LoRaWAN gateway.
